How to Pack Fragile Items Like a Pro
Dishes, glassware, electronics, mirrors, and keepsakes — pack them right and they arrive intact. Here are the techniques professional movers use to protect what matters most.
Most breakage happens from two mistakes: not enough cushioning, and boxes packed so loosely that contents rattle. Fix those and almost everything survives the trip.
Supplies you'll need
- Sturdy small-to-medium boxes (and dish-pack/cell kits for glassware)
- Packing paper (newsprint) and bubble wrap
- Strong packing tape and a marker
- Towels and blankets for extra cushioning
Dishes and plates
Cushion the box bottom with crumpled paper. Wrap each plate individually, then stack them on edge — vertical plates resist breakage far better than flat stacks. Fill the top and sides with paper so nothing moves, and keep the box light enough to lift.
Glasses and stemware
Wrap each glass in paper, stuffing some inside the bowl for support, and stand them upright in a divided box if possible. Never let glass touch glass. Pad every gap.
Electronics and TVs
Use original boxes when you can. Otherwise wrap screens in a blanket, then bubble wrap, and box snugly. Photograph cable setups before unplugging so reassembly is easy, and mark the box THIS SIDE UP.
Mirrors, art, and lamps
Tape an X across glass to stabilize it, wrap in bubble wrap and a blanket, and stand flat pieces on edge — never lay them flat under weight. Remove lampshades and bulbs and pack them separately.
Labeling
Mark fragile boxes FRAGILE on several sides, note the destination room and contents, and tell your crew which boxes are fragile so they ride safely and come off the truck first.
