How Much Does It Cost to Move from Dallas to Houston?
A Dallas to Houston move costs $2,800 to $12,400+ depending on the size of your home. A studio or one-bedroom runs $2,800–$3,050. A two-bedroom runs $3,700–$4,100. A three-bedroom house — the most common move on this corridor — runs $5,700–$6,500+.
That is the whole answer, and the rest of this page explains what moves you within those ranges.
The route is 240 miles straight down I-45 South, about three to four hours of driving without traffic. It is an intrastate move: both cities are in Texas, so it falls under TxDMV rules rather than federal interstate regulation. We are a licensed motor carrier — USDOT #3918729, TxDMV #009567347C — not a broker, so the company that quotes the job is the company that shows up to do it.
Dallas to Houston Moving Cost — Every Home Size
| Home Size | Estimated Cost Range | Typical Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 Bedroom | $2,800 – $3,050 | ~5–6 hrs total — load, 4-hr drive, unload |
| 2 Bedroom Apt / Home | $3,700 – $4,100 | ~7–8 hrs total |
| 3 Bedroom House | $5,700 – $6,500+ | ~9–12 hrs total |
| 4 Bedroom House | $8,600 – $9,900+ | ~12–15 hrs total |
| 5 Bedroom Estate | $10,500 – $12,400+ | ~14–18 hrs total |
Every range above includes professional loading in Dallas–Fort Worth, full transport to Houston, and unloading and placement at the far end. Pads, dollies, straps and basic disassembly and reassembly are included, not billed separately.
The single biggest driver is home size, and it is not linear. A three-bedroom is not fifty percent more than a two-bedroom — it is closer to fifty percent again, because it usually means a larger truck, an extra mover, and a load time that pushes the day past the point where one crew can comfortably finish.
Is It a Flat Rate or an Hourly Rate?
It is a flat rate. We scope the job first — home size, what is in it, the access at both ends — and then quote one number. That number is what you pay. There is no hourly meter running while a crew works out how to get a sofa round a corner, and no revised total on delivery day.
The ranges in the table above are the bands those flat quotes land in. Your quote is a single figure inside the band for your home size, fixed in writing before anything is loaded.
No hidden fees. No shuttle fee, no long-carry surcharge sprung on the day, no fuel adjustment, no percentage added for valuation at the end. If something about your move affects the price, it is in the quote you agreed, not on the invoice afterwards.
Why Our Number Is Higher Than the Aggregator Estimates
Search for this route and you will see figures well below ours — often around $1,000 to $2,000 for a one-bedroom. It is worth understanding what that buys, because it is not the same service.
We load and drive the same day. For a two-bedroom and smaller, your things are loaded in Dallas and driven to Houston that day. A three-bedroom is either same day, or loaded one day and delivered the next.
The cheaper quotes almost always mean a consolidated load — your belongings share a trailer with several other households, and delivery happens inside a window that can run days or weeks while the truck fills and routes. That is a legitimate way to move, and it is genuinely cheaper. It is just a different product, and the price difference is the truck, not the markup.
The other thing those low figures often are: a broker estimate rather than a carrier quote. A broker sells your job on to whoever will take it, and the number you were quoted is not binding on the company that actually shows up. We are the carrier — USDOT #3918729, TxDMV #009567347C — so the company that quotes your move is the company that performs it.
What Actually Changes the Number
Packing. Full-service packing adds $300–$800 depending on home size. It is the line item most people cut first and regret most often. A 240-mile run on I-45 puts more vibration through a load than an across-town move, and fragile items packed in a hurry the night before are the ones that arrive broken.
Specialty items. Gun safes, pianos, pool tables and large artwork add $195–$650. These need different equipment rather than more hands. Gun safes in particular are ground-floor placement only — we do not take safes up or down stairs, on any move.
Access at both ends. A long carry from the truck to the door, a reserved elevator with a two-hour window, a narrow corridor in a Houston high-rise — each adds crew time, and crew time is what you are actually buying. Tell us about the access when you call and it goes in the written quote instead of appearing on moving day.
Timing. Month-end and the back half of summer are the busiest windows in Texas, in both directions. A midweek date in the middle of a month gives you more crew options than the last Friday in July.
One Day or Two?
Most Dallas to Houston moves up to three bedrooms finish in a single long day. A three-bedroom runs nine to twelve hours door to door, which works with an early start.
Above that, the arithmetic stops working. A four-bedroom is twelve to fifteen hours and a five-bedroom estate fourteen to eighteen — schedule those across two days rather than trying to be heroic and unloading a nursery at eleven at night.
The drive itself is the fixed part: 240 miles, three to four hours. Everything else is load and unload time, which is what the home-size ranges above are really measuring.
How to Get the Number Down
- Book midweek, mid-month. The same move costs less when crews are not stacked.
- Purge before you pay to move it. You are paying to transport volume. The garage is where the savings are.
- Pack what you safely can, leave the fragile items to us. Partial packing is a real option and it is priced that way.
- Be honest about access up front. Surprises on moving day cost more than the same information given on the phone.
- Get the quote in writing. Ours is binding before the truck is loaded. If a competitor will not put the number on paper, that is the answer to your question.
Why This Route Is Busy
Houston rent runs materially below Dallas, and the job market in energy, medicine and aerospace pulls DFW families south every year. The Texas Medical Center, the Energy Corridor and the Clear Lake aerospace corridor around Johnson Space Center are the three destinations we load for most often.
None of that changes your price — it changes the calendar. On this corridor the good crews are booked earliest in the windows everyone else wants too.
Dallas to Houston Moving Cost — Questions Answered
How much does it cost to move from Dallas to Houston? A studio or 1-bedroom runs $2,800–$3,050, a 2-bedroom $3,700–$4,100, a 3-bedroom house $5,700–$6,500+, a 4-bedroom $8,600–$9,900+, and a 5-bedroom estate $10,500–$12,400+ — all-in over 240 miles, confirmed in writing before loading.
How long does the move take? The drive is 240 miles on I-45 South, three to four hours. Door to door, a 1-bedroom is 5–6 hours and a 3-bedroom 9–12 hours.
Is it interstate or intrastate? Intrastate — Texas to Texas, regulated by TxDMV. We hold TxDMV #009567347C and USDOT #3918729.
What adds to the cost? Packing ($300–$800), specialty items like gun safes and pianos ($195–$650), and access at either end.
Can it be done in one day? Yes, for most homes up to three bedrooms. Four and five bedroom homes are normally two-day moves.
Is it a flat rate or hourly? Flat rate. We scope the job, quote one number in writing, and that is what you pay — no hourly meter and no hidden fees.
Why is your price higher than the estimates I see online? Because we load and drive the same day for a two-bedroom and smaller, and same or next day for a three-bedroom. Cheaper quotes usually mean a consolidated load sharing a trailer with other households on a multi-day delivery window, or a broker estimate that is not binding on whoever actually turns up.
