How to check a Dallas mover in about two minutes

1. Get the licence number. Intrastate Texas moves are regulated by the TxDMV; interstate moves by the FMCSA under a USDOT number. Ask for whichever applies and look it up. Both databases are free and public. A company that dodges this question has answered it.

2. Establish carrier or broker. Ask whether the company owns the truck and employs the crew. Brokers resell your job to a carrier you have not vetted. This is the single most common source of long-distance moving complaints.

3. Read the damage coverage, not the marketing. Basic released-value coverage under federal rules is 60 cents per pound per article — which on a 50lb television is $30. If a company advertises more than that, get the figure in writing.

4. Compare the whole number, not the hourly rate. Travel fees, fuel surcharges, stair fees, heavy-item fees and materials are where quotes diverge. A $125/hr rate with three add-ons beats a $150/hr rate with none only sometimes.

5. Insist on a walkthrough for anything large. Any mover quoting a three-bedroom house off a phone call is guessing, and the correction lands on move day.
